Brake Pads

Your brake pads are a main part of your braking system and they are a part that you should never be overlooked. Brake pads compress against your brake rotors to create friction which causes your car to stop.So your brake pads are working really hard, really often..
The force they have to exert to stop a moving vehicle is massive and generates a lot of heat which erodes the brake pads.

Worn brake pads means ineffective braking and that can mean danger on the road. And so consistent testing and assessments of your brake pad's condition is essential.

Are there signs a brake pad replacement is due?

Brakes that squeal can be a sign that your brake pads are wearing down; many pads have a small metal piece implanted in them that scrapes on the disc when your brake pads are getting worn, causing that high pitch noise. However, this doesn’t mean you should wait until you hear noises to get your pads inspected, we recommend having your brakes inspected at every service.

It is important to remember that unusual brake sounds are not only caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.

At Carrington Street Auto Repairs we offer a free 65 Point Vehicle Inspection Report with every car service. As part of our Vehicle Inspection Report we inspect the brake pads for wear and will tell you if they call for replacing. We can also advise the right pad for your driving conditions.

How often should my Brake pads be replaced?

Brake Pads can last anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km's. This can change according to a number of influences such as; driving conditions and style, regular heavy loads. If your brake pads are wearing out too often your mechanic might advise using a heavier duty or heat resistant brake pad more suited to your vehicle.

Can I replace my own brake pads?

Some things are best left to trained technicians and this is one of them. You should never let anyone but a qualified professional touch something as important to your safety as your braking system.
